I will sing of the steadfast love of the Lord, forever; with my mouth I will make known your faithfulness to all generations. Psalm 89:1
As the saying goes, ‘life be lifing’. Life comes at us fast and hard sometimes. Just when we think we have overcome one thing, something new pops up. Life has a way of knocking us back a few steps occasionally. When this happens, we begin to question God’s goodness and his faithfulness. We begin to have thoughts wondering if God hears us or if he even cares.
But that’s the exact place that the enemy wants us to be. He wants us to feel hopeless and lost. He wants us to feel like God is far from us. But we know that the exact opposite is true.
And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age. Matthew 28:20
In these moments of fear and despair, our job is to remember. We must reflect on God’s faithfulness. So many times, we get caught up in our current situation, that we lose sight of the God we serve. We often forget about the times when God has shown up in previous seasons of our lives. We allow our current chapter to define the entire story, instead of allowing God to continue the book.

It is important for us to remember God’s word and works because it keeps us grounded in God’s truth, deepens our faith and trust in God, and helps us keep an attitude of gratitude.
I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your wonders of old. I will ponder all your work, and meditate on your mighty deeds. Psalm 77:11-12
I think this is why we see God using the word “remember” many times in the Old Testament. Most times, the Lord would tell them to ‘remember’ when they were about to take on a difficult task or face a challenge that could cause them to be hesitant or afraid. When the Israelite's were about to face their enemies before entering the Promised Land, the Lord addressed their fear.
If you say in your heart, ‘These nations are greater than I. How can I dispossess them?’ you shall not be afraid of them but you shall remember what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt. Deuteronomy 7:17-18
When the people would forget God’s faithfulness, they would easily be led into sin and idolatry. The process of remembering keeps us from falling into our sinful nature and helps us to stay alert to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:11
They were also told to remember in moments of deliverance and rescue. When the people had been rescued from slavery, Moses told the people to remember what happened on this day.
Then Moses said to the people, ‘Remember this day in which you came out from Egypt, out of the house of slavery, for by a strong hand the Lord brought you out from this place. Exodus 13:3
By remembering what God had done, they could stand confident when faced with persecution again. They could pause and reflect on the time when God had come through for them before. In moments of uncertainty, we remember that God is trustworthy. We can put our faith in God’s word because it is true.
So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it. Isaiah 55:11
I struggle with remembering things in general. (I’ve even googled what causes you to not remember things, lol) One thing that helps is keeping a journal and recording everything. Your prayers and answered prayers, your thoughts, and God’s blessings and revelations. When we record our prayer requests, we can make it a habit to go back and read these testimonies of how God showed up. When we are feeling down or discouraged, we have a collection of memories to reignite our fire. It inspires us to be filled with a heart of thanksgiving for all that God has done.
Don’t let a moment of fog make you forget the clear evidence of God's faithfulness throughout your story.
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13:8
