Dealing With Uncertainty

Updated: Mar 10

It’s a lot going on in the world. A Whole lot, foreal! And one of the biggest things we see is uncertainty.  So much uncertainty in the world regarding work, our futures, finances, family; literally in every area of life we are dealing with the unknown. With that uncertainty, there is so much anxiety, so much fear, so much depression, so much anger, and so many what ifs.

Most people struggle with control issues in general (I know I do). We want to be in control because when we realize we are not in control, we feel weak. We begin to feel as if we are at life’s mercy, like all we can do is ride the wave of life and hope for the best. We say we trust God and allow him to be in the driver’s seat, but in reality, we want to control the wheel instead. When God begins to lead us down an unfamiliar path, we want to reach over and grab the wheel. Do we really believe that he knows all things? Do we really believe what he says in Romans 8:28?

Romans 8:28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

When I look around me and have conversations, I’ve noticed that there is so much worry and wonder. Worry about job security. Worry about our kid’s future. Worry about the state of our country and our world. We are wondering what things will look like next month, next year, next ten years. There is so much to be thinking about.

But we know as children of God, that he holds the whole world in his hands. He created it all and is in control of it all.

Psalm 24:1-2 The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it. The world and all its people belong to him. For he laid the earth’s foundation on the seas and built it on the ocean depths.

Because of sin, we will have trials and troubles while we are here on Earth, God told us this in His Word.

John 16:33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

(But make sure you read the entire chapter, the whole book, the whole Bible 🙃)

To overcome something, means to have victory over it. God has given us many ways in His Word on how to overcome (prayer, repentance, obedience, having faith, etc) . He tells us over and over again that he is with us always.

Joshua 1:9 Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.

Isaiah 41:10 ‘Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’

Do we really believe these things? God has laid it out plainly for us in His Word. There will be things that happen in this world that will shake us up. Things that will cause us to become anxious, afraid, and disappointed. We will experience the ups and downs of this world. But we are called to walk in faith. In 2 Corinthians, we are reminded that we walk by faith and not by sight. We don’t depend on what we see, for we know what we see can change at any moment, but what we know, is certain and cannot change. God’s word is unchanging and unfailing. He has proven himself faithful time and time again. His promises never return to us void. We place our hope in the all-knowing, most generous, and most powerful God. There is nothing that he cannot do and no one who can stop him. He has the last Word as we already know the ending of the story.  VICTORY IS WON.

So, it’s easy to turn on the news and be overwhelmed and consumed with what is going on. The world builds its hope on sand, but as believers of Christ, our faith is built on The Rock.  (Matthew 7: 24-27) When we lose our jobs, when we experience setbacks, and when disappointments seem to be frequent, we don’t lose hope. Instead, because our Faith is built on the rock, it is solid, it cannot be destroyed, nor can it fall. Our futures are secure with Christ.

2 Corinthians 4: 8-10 We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair.  We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed.  Through suffering, our bodies continue to share in the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be seen in our bodies.

So stand firm!! He made you, He will care for you, He will carry you, save you, AND be your God! The road may look a uncertain, but God is still with you! Isaiah 46:4 Exchange your anxious thoughts for the peace of God.
